Searchers say they have found a large object at the bottom of a Cape Breton bay, about 200 metres from where a car drove off a small ferry and disappeared last week.

RCMP Sgt. Craig Yorke said the object was detected using a side-scan sonar device around 11:15 a.m. in St. Anns Bay.

He says RCMP divers have marked the spot and are preparing to enter the water.

Police say they are investigating the possibility that a missing man who was last seen at a Cape Breton gas station may have been the person behind the wheel.

Jerry Hengeveld of Waterville, N.S., was reported missing around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Yorke says the 81-year-old and his 2007 Toyota Camry were last seen at a gas station in Baddeck, N.S., on March 25 around 5 p.m. — about three hours before a car drove on to the Englishtown ferry and failed to stop.
