Owen Pallett, who performs under the stage name Final Fantasy, won the inaugural Polaris Music Prize and a cheque for $20,000, awarded by music critics for the best album of the year, regardless of genre.

Mr. Pallett sings and performs playing the violin with a highly innovative use of a digital looping tape recorder allowing him to layer intricate musical passages.

His album, called He Poos Clouds, won over nine finalists, including work from such artists as Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers and Sarah Harmer.
