Flooding interrupted the morning commute in Toronto, closing down part of the subway line the day after a flash flood pelted the nearby city of Burlington with two-months' worth of rain.
The Toronto Transit Commission suspended service in both directions between Spadina Station and Lawrence West due to flooding at the St. Clair West station Tuesday morning. Shuttle buses were in service to get commuters around the clog until fire crews and TTC workers could pump the water out of the station. By noon, the system was back up and running.
The TTC said the flooding was due to rain water that had overflowed onto the tracks. "There was actually blockage between our catch basin and the city water main. The pumps were working but that was preventing anything from draining into the city water main," TTC spokesperson Jessica Martin explained. Ms. Martin said she wasn't sure what had blocked the basin.
"We're going to send a crew in this evening after subway service closes to make sure that blockage is fully cleared."
