The Globe and Mail website has been awarded the World's Best-Designed Web Site prize by the Society of News Design.

The Globe and CNN.com shared the award, which was presented at an awards gala Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri. Other honoured media organizations included the New York Times, The Guardian and NPR.

"The award is a huge recognition from our peers," said Mike Pletch, the Globe's manager of creative design for digital media, who accepted the award for the Globe. "Rethinking how an online news site should work for our reader's lifestyles and needs was a major factor in leading us to this current design. It had to look great and work for our readers.

"What makes the design so great is its well-organized and uncluttered appearance, making it easy for our readers to locate, read and interact with the outstanding journalism the Globe and Mail is known for," he added. "Our multimedia options span all content and really broaden the news experience for our readers."

The Society for News Design (SND) is an international organization for news media professionals and visual communicators, specifically those who create print, web and mobile products. The judges said the Globe's website won points for its modern and elegant look as well as good use of multimedia.

This SND award comes just a week after the Globe's website also won the Online News Association general excellence award in the medium site category. Earlier this year, the Globe's print edition also picked up the SND award of excellence for the redesign of the newspaper.
