A panel of international judges has chosen globeandmail.com as having the best Home Page among major media websites around the world.

The Globe and its journalists were also finalists in six other categories in the 2013 EPPY Awards.

"Everyone at the Globe is extremely proud of this recognition," John Stackhouse, Globe Editor-in-Chief, said Wednesday after the announcement.

"It speaks to the superlative nature of our Home Page that is the home of world-class journalism, commentary and video, and the front door to a site that continues to very effectively serve digital subscribers, casual visitors and advertisers‎."

The other six categories where The Globe was a finalist included: best daily newspaper website; best mobile website; best overall website design; and best business blog.

The Globe also received the nod for best news or event feature for The Summit Series, a multimedia package on the 1972 hockey match-up between Canada and the Soviet Union that reached mythological heights in the Canadian consciousness.

As well, The Globe was a finalist in the category of best use of photography. For Borderline: Chronicling a drug war from the deadly U.S.-Mexico frontier, documentary photojournalist Louie Palu spent nearly a year crisscrossing more than 3,000 kilometres of the border to tell the story of Mexico's drug wars, which claimed nearly 50,000 lives in six years, according to government figures.

The EPPY Awards, presented by the U.S.-based journal Editor and Publisher, recognizes the best media-affiliated websites across 30 categories. It is now in its 18th year. The Globe's win and its finalist nominations were all in the division of websites with more than one million unique monthly visitors.

Editor and Publisher staff, along with a panel of 78 international judges, reviewed entries for three weeks before deciding on the finalists.

The Globe won four EPPYs in 2012: best newspaper-affiliated media website, best overall website design, best business blog (for Economy Lab) and best automotive site (for Globe Drive). Economy Lab and Globe Drive won the same awards in 2011.
