Major pileup on Highway 401, near Belleville, Ont., leaves several injured

Police say several people have been injured in a huge pileup involving at least 20 transport trucks and many other vehicles on Highway 401 east of Belleville, Ont.

Eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway have been closed between Highway 41 and Deseronto Road in Napanee after the pileup Wednesday morning.

Const. Jackie Perry of Napanee OPP says the scene stretches for about three kilometres although not all the stopped vehicles were involved in collisions.

While police could not give exact numbers, Perry says several people were injured, although none of the injuries are life-threatening.

Police also say a bus was sent to the scene to pick up and shelter stranded motorists.

There's no immediate word on when the highway will reopen and police are advising drivers to avoid the area.
