A 29-year-old man has died after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a moose in western Newfoundland.

RCMP say the collision happened on the Trans-Canada Highway near St George's around 11 p.m. Saturday.

They say officers found the vehicle about six metres off the highway down a slight embankment.

Police say the man from Stephenville Crossing was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle's passenger, a 26-year-old woman from Stephenville Crossing, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A police traffic unit is investigating.
