A man has been arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in the fatal beating of a 67-year-old woman on a downtown Montreal street.

Jason Derrald Sivret, 38, will return to court in September.

Montreal police spokeswoman Anie Lemieux says he also faces two charges of assault.

Police say the woman was savagely beaten as she crossed the street after midnight on Monday.

She was allegedly attacked by a man who had been kicked out of a strip club club for aggressive behaviour.

He had been taking out his anger on parked cars and other people in the area.

The woman was pummelled around the head and upper body until a passerby intervened and pulled her attacker off.

Other people flagged down a passing police car and officers arrested the assailant.

The woman was declared dead shortly afterward in hospital.
