The Nova Scotia legislature's new management commission has voted to reorganize the Speaker's Office in the wake of the province's constituency expense scandal.

In its first meeting, the all-party commission voted to accept recommendations that the office be trimmed from six staffers to two.

Four staff members will be transferred to units in the Finance Department and the Public Service Commission along with a number of administrative duties including payroll and human resources.

Deputy premier Frank Corbett says the move will help streamline services and won't add costs.

But Conservative Murray Scott says he believes the office should be beefed up, not gutted.

He questions whether any savings will be realized, given the office will retain a director making $100,000 a year and will also need an additional $100,000 to hire a new staffer and acquire technology to post members' expenses online.
