Former mayoral candidate and city councillor Jane Pitfield is making a comeback. She says she will file her nomination paper this afternoon to run for councillor in East York's Ward 29, an opportunity that opened up when City Hall veteran and former deputy mayor Case Ootes announced he would not run to represent the ward again.

"I think it's going to be a very exciting time in the city of Toronto and I would like to be a part of that," said Ms. Pitfield, 55, who lost to Mayor David Miller in the 2006 election, taking 32 per cent of the vote to Mr. Miller's 57 per cent.

Known as a moderate right winger, Ms. Pitfield said her priority as councillor would be "to improve the city's financial management and stop using taxes as the solution."

Though she now lives on North Toronto, she pointed out that she began her eight-year stint on city council representing East York. Since her mayoral race, she has focused on volunteer work, labouring on causes from homelessness to heritage preservation in the Caledon district northwest of Toronto.
