In an unprecedented move, media giant Quebecor is taking the Speaker of the National Assembly to court, accusing one of the world's oldest democratic institutions of violating the company's right to exercise its freedom of speech.
National Assembly Speaker Yvon Vallières recently turned down a request by Quebecor to have its reporters accredited to cover the Quebec legislature.
The request was turned down under the advice of the National Assembly Press Gallery, whose members feared that accrediting Quebecor journalists would create tensions with reporters for the Journal de Montréal, who have been locked out by the company in the course of a labour dispute.
