A senior RCMP officer has been charged with sexual offences involving a 12-year-old girl more than three decades ago.
Saskatchewan RCMP said Insp. Ronald Makar faces one count of sexual intercourse with a female without her consent and one count of having sexual intercourse with a female under the age of 14.
The charges are based on the 1982 Criminal Code and would be equivalent to sexual assault today.
"Allegations like these are disturbing when made against a member of the general public," Supt. Alfredo Bangloy said at a news conference in Regina Tuesday.
"For a serving police officer to be facing charges like these is extremely disturbing."
Makar has been a Mountie for 34 years. He was arrested Tuesday morning at the Wood Buffalo detachment in Fort McMurray, Alta., which he has commanded since 2012.
He has been suspended with pay.
Bangloy said a woman filed a statement last year alleging that she was assaulted in the summer of 1982 by a man and a woman "who were involved in a romantic relationship."
The woman, Constance Haduik, is charged with one count of indecent assault of a female person.
She was arrested at her work in Kyle, Sask., last Thursday.
Bangloy would not say how the three were connected.
"I can't get into the specifics of the relationship other than to say the 12-year-old victim was known to both accused," he said.
Makar worked as a constable at the Carlyle, Sask., RCMP detachment in 1982.
Most of Makar's service was in Saskatchewan.
He also worked in Kyle, Fond du Lac, Regina, Milestone and Saskatchewan RCMP division headquarters in Regina.
Both of the accused are to make their first court appearances June 4 in Carlyle.
RCMP said if convicted, Makar would face an RCMP Code of Conduct review that could result in his dismissal.
"While in some cases where a member faces criminal charges the appropriate disciplinary sanction may be dismissal from the RCMP, it is dependent on the case and is not automatic," the RCMP said in a release.
