A Saskatchewan man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for stabbing his father to death with a pair of scissors during a fight in their kitchen, News Talk 650 CKOM reports.
Arnoldo David Rey Jr., 43, was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 70-year-old father, Arnoldo Rey Sr., who was missing for several months before he was reported missing.
Rey Jr. pleaded guilty Monday to the lesser charge of manslaughter during what was scheduled to be the start of his preliminary hearing at Saskatoon Provincial Court.
He killed his father on July 26, 2012, while the two were living together in Krydor, Sask.
According to an agreed statement of facts, they got into a heated argument after Rey Sr. told his son he should be more like his older brother.
A physical tussle led to the father grabbing a pair of scissors, but the son grabbed them away and used them to stab his father in the neck and head.
He panicked, left the house for approximately six hours, and returned to bury his father's body in the backyard greenhouse.
According to police, Rey Sr. hadn't been seen for several months when he was reported missing in May 2013.
RCMP found his remains five months later on Oct. 28, 2013 after his son came to the police station and admitted: "I was the cause of my father's disappearance."
He initially told investigators that the victim had left the country with a woman.
