Text of a statement from Tam Matthews, headmaster of Ashbury College in Ottawa:

"Many people will be aware of an incident in Boston two years ago among Ashbury students on a school trip.

"The family of the student victim has initiated a civil lawsuit against the school.

"The school has thoroughly investigated the affair, taken disciplinary action where appropriate, and co-operated with the authorities. It fully supports the actions of the teachers on the trip. It regrets the outcome for the victim and his family, but will vigorously defend the lawsuit.

"Throughout this difficult affair, Ashbury has reinforced the values of an Ashbury education and continues to offer a caring community and a safe, structured environment in which students and staff are encouraged to reach their full potential.

"You can appreciate there will be no further comment while the issue is before the courts."
