Via Rail says a collision between one of its trains and a CN freight train east of Kingston, Ont., has shut down the Toronto to Montreal and Toronto to Ottawa routes for the day.

Via says the freight train struck the passenger train's locomotive and a few cars about seven kilometers from Gananoque.

It says the train was travelling from Ottawa to Toronto with about 300 people on board. One passenger reported a minor injury.

The rail company says it is trying to arrange transportation for the passengers and encourages all others with tickets for today to make alternate travel plans.

It says tickets will be reiumbursed without charge.

Service is scheduled to resume tomorrow.
