Former Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow, former federal finance minister Michael Wilson, writer Guy Vanderhaeghe, sportscaster Johnny Esaw and media magnate John Honderich are among the newest members of the Order of Canada.
Mr. Romanow, a New Democrat who capped a political career of more than 30 years with a royal commission study of the health care system for former Liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien, was named an officer of the order Tuesday by Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson.
Five people who had already been named to the order were promoted to companion, the highest rank. They were:
Philanthropist and York University chancellor Avie Bennett; University of Toronto law professor emeritus Martin Friedland; astrophysicist Hubert Reeves of the University of Montreal and the National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris; former Royal Winnipeg Ballet artistic director Arnold Spohr; former National Ballet of Canada prima ballerina Veronica Tennant.
