Yellowknife RCMP have shot and killed a woman after a four-hour standoff.
Staff Sgt. Brad Kaeding says police received a report Wednesday afternoon of a suicidal woman and found her armed and barricaded inside a home.
A crisis negotiator was called in but after several hours the woman came out of the home carrying a long-barrelled firearm.
She was told repeatedly to drop it but continued to advance and pointed her weapon at officers, who opened fire.
She was pronounced dead at hospital.
Sgt. Kaeding says protocol requires an external police agency to investigate the shooting.
