A retired chief warrant officer has been named as the new veterans ombudsman.

Guy Parent replaces the outspoken Pat Stogran, a retired colonel who led a high-profile - and controversial - campaign to improve benefits for veterans.

Mr. Parent was Mr. Stogran's director of investigations and worked in the military ombudsman's office for nine years before that.

He is a 37-year Canadian Forces veteran.

The Conservative government opted not to renew Mr. Stogran's five-year mandate when it expired this fall.

Mr. Parent's term begins on Remembrance Day.

"I am confident that his vast experience will allow him to serve with competence, passion and conviction on behalf of the men and women to whom Canadians owe so much," Veterans Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn said Friday.
