Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said fiscal discipline will be the focus of the 2013 budget, saying it is the most important contribution Ottawa can make toward boosting confidence in the Canadian economy.
In a speech to the Economic Club of Canada, Mr. Flaherty provided an overview of the government's priorities, including immigration reform, increasing workforce participation of aboriginals and people with disabilities and encouraging innovation, research and development.
"I look forward to returning to balanced budgets in Canada," he said.
On the topic of a future infrastructure plan, Mr. Flaherty stressed that no decision has been made.
"We have made unprecedented investments in infrastructure since forming government in 2006," he said. "I must say that no decision has been made in terms of a future infrastructure plan, but any decision will be made in the context of our current fiscal situation."
