Manitoba Liberals would like expanded rapid transit in Winnipeg and are offering cash to make it happen.

Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard says if he were premier he'd give the city $44-million a year to put toward an extension of a rapid transit line that is currently being built.

Mr. Gerrard says it only makes sense to continue the line south to the University of Manitoba, where a new stadium is being built for the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The city has not committed to the extension and has held different positions on whether rapid transit should involve buses, streetcars or light rail.

Mr. Gerrard says he would work with the city to ensure the extension got started sometime after the Oct. 4 provincial election.

Currently, Winnipeg's rapid transit line is just 3.7 kilometres.
