The Ontario government is not backing down in its dispute with the Catholic church over the use of the term gay-straight alliances in schools.
Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, says Catholic schools should be allowed to use their own ways to deal with homophobia and should not have to allow the use of the term gay-straight alliance.
Premier Dalton McGuinty says he represents people of all faiths and those with no faith, and notes the government is not mandating the use of the term, just insisting students have that option for naming anti-homophobia clubs.
He says words matter and that's why the government changed its position on the use of gay-straight alliance.
Mr. McGuinty says he wants to send a strong signal to all kids that they are accepted for who they are.
The Tories oppose mandating the use of the term gay-straight alliance, saying the government has no business legislating the name of student clubs.
