The declared candidates for Speaker of the House of Commons are preaching the need for enhanced decorum.
Calgary MP Lee Richardson, one of the politicians who has let his interest in the job be known, told reporters after a caucus meeting on Wednesday that "it's about finding the respect for each other in the House, and restoring respect for each other, and restoring respect for Parliament. If you restore your respect for Parliament, then Canadians will restore their respect for Parliament."
Meanwhile, the New Democrats are handing out buttons that say Opto Civilitas, which means Wish For Civility.
And Conservative House Leader Peter van Loan thinks there could be a different tone when Parliament returns on Thursday.
"I think with the NDP as the Official Opposition, they have a history of being a more policy-based party," Mr. Van Loan told reporters.
"That means there is a better chance for a policy-based debate, he said, "rather than debates on personality, or process issues or trivia that used to dominate."
Mr. Van Loan said that makes him optimistic that there will be more positive tone.
