Justin Trudeau enraged animal-rights activists when he and his family posed for his Christmas card all swathed in fur, now there he is eating – and looking as if he's really enjoying – his roasted ragout of seal.

Mr. Trudeau, the Liberal MP for the Montreal riding of Papineau, was one of a number of politicians at the second annual Taste of the Arctic – a sold-out dinner held at the National Gallery of Canada on Tuesday to raise money for Inuit culture.

Laureen Harper, the Prime Minister's wife, also attended as did former governor-general Michaëlle Jean, who put seal on the menu in political Ottawa after sampling seal heart while visiting the North in 2009.

About the seal meat? Mr. Trudeau played it straight, concentrating on the broader event. "It was wonderful to be able to celebrate Inuit culture here in Ottawa, and that makes me miss the high Arctic."
