Let's be clear: President Barack Obama is not proposing to implement the Canadian model of health care (known in the United States as a single-payer system). In fact, in our terms, he's proposing to implement two-tier health care - and he's doing so precisely to counter the horror stories that the Republicans and others are raising to build opposition to Mr. Obama's proposed public heath-care option.

Rather than supporting Mr. Obama, therefore, Canadian politicians appearing on U.S. television to tout the Canadian health care system are actually doing him a disservice. Sure it's difficult for a politician to turn down television time - particularly on U.S. television. But if they can manage to resist the temptation, our politicians might actually learn something about true health-care reform by listening to the debate in the United States
