Security concerns trigger one-day closure of Canadian embassy in Cairo

An Egyptian protester throws back a tear gas canister toward riot police, unseen, during clashes outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo, Egypt, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012. Protesters clash with police near the U.S. Embassy in Cairo for the third day in a row. Police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators and the two sides pelted each other with rocks.

Canada has closed its embassy in Cairo for the day as protests over an anti-Muslim film continued outside the U.S. embassy in the city.

A spokeswoman for Canada's Foreign Affairs department, Chrystiane Roy, said the Cairo embassy was closed for the day as a precautionary measure, since it's relatively near the American mission and the protests.

It's normally closed on Friday and Saturday, Egypt's weekend, and is expected to re-open Sunday. "We're following events," Ms. Roy said.

The demonstrations in Cairo have now gone into a third day, as protesters object to the release of an U.S.-produced online film that insults the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

No other Canadian embassies in the region have been closed, although there have been protests elsewhere. After U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens was killed in Benghazi on Wednesday, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said security at Canada's embassy in Tripoli is being reviewed.
