Toronto police say 16 pedestrians have been hit by vehicles over the past few days, leading to one death.
That number includes a 10-year-old girl who was taken to hospital with head injuries this morning after she was hit by a vehicle.
The fatality was a woman who stepped off a curb into the path of a truck Wednesday morning.
Police say there is usually a spike in the number of pedestrian-related accidents this time of year.
It's just after the end of daylight time and when pedestrians start to wear heavier, darker clothing.
Sgt. Tim Burrows says the heavy rain and stiff winds in the past couple of days were likely contributing factors as well.
"Pedestrians sometimes want to get out of the elements really quick," he said.
"They may sacrifice their own personal safety doing that, not taking that extra precaution of stopping, looking, listening - the good basic safety principles that protect us all."
