Residents of a Barrie neighbourhood have been evacuated as experts deal with explosive devices found inside a home while making arrests in a cold-case homicide investigation.

Barrie Police Service constable Angela Butler says about 25 homes have been evacuated as a precaution, and residents might have to wait up to 24 hours as the explosives disposal unit complete the "slow process."

"We have to very careful," Constable Butler said, adding that the team has yet to identify all the explosives inside the residence.

Most of the residents are staying with friends and family; others have been put up in a hotel, she said.

Constable Butler said that a father and son, both from Barrie, were arrested Thursday in connection with the 1978 slaying of Michael Traynor.

Donald Feldhoff, 54, faces a charge of first-degree murder and his father, William Feldhoff, 75, is charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Mr. Traynor, then 26, was reported him missing on Sept. 18, 1978. His body was discovered on Oct. 3, 1978, with signs of trauma in a bush area off the main roadway, now known as St. Vincent Street in Springwater Township.
