A 9-year-old boy has been taken to a Toronto hospital in critical condition after falling from an escalator at an east-end shopping centre.
Officials say it's believed the boy, who was at the Scarborough Town Centre with his mother, climbed to the top of the escalator before falling and hitting his head.
It's estimated he fell about six metres.
The boy was reported to be unconscious but breathing when emergency officials attended the scene.
He was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children on an emergency run in critical condition.
Police are talking to witnesses and plan to review surveillance cameras in the area to figure out what happened.
"Officers are currently on scene trying to determine exactly how the baby got to the top of the escalator," said Constable Tony Vella, who expressed concern for the child's family, especially his mother.
"Hopefully her son will recover well," he said.
