Police say a man is in custody after a woman was stabbed in a car in Brampton on Tuesday and some passersby managed to pull her to safety.

Peel regional police say the woman was listed in stable condition in a trauma centre after being stabbed several times in the area of Bramalea City Centre near Queen Street and Central Park Drive at about 6 a.m.

The woman was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious, life-threatening injuries but her condition was later upgraded.

Police say a male suspect was arrested following a police pursuit, and was treated for self-inflicted stab wounds.

A police cruiser was involved in a collision with another vehicle during the chase, but police say no one was hurt in the crash.

Witnesses told police the stabbing took place inside a vehicle and passersby came to the rescue of the victim, pulling her out of the car.
