One of a Kind Spring Show & Sale
We saw our first Robins of the spring yesterday. They were struggling with hand-carved leather coasters and an artfully created ceramic pitcher, so you know the birds are planning to do a fair bit of entertaining when the weather turns nice. Rootstock at the Winter Garden
With leaves on its ceiling, the Winter Garden is the most outdoorsy indoor theatre in town. Which makes it an appropriate venue for the Jackson-Triggs Winery to recreate the atmosphere of its Niagara region amphitheatre. Wine will be on hand, and so too will the singing songwriters Steven Page, Lindi Ortega and Alan Doyle. The country chanteuse Ms. Ortega is smokey, twangy and tangy – the rascal of the vineyard, one might say. March 29, 8 p.m. $30 to $60. Kraftwerk: 3-D Concert
They used to call it Krautrock back in the 1970s, but is that even a politically correct term any more? Whatever. The electronic-trance pioneers and sly humorists (whose albums Autobahn and Trans-Europe Express are easier to traverse under interesting influences) bring bionic beats, Düsseldorf whimsy and 3-D glasses for an elaborate encounter of the minimalist-music kind. Me Talking to Myself in the Future
The actress, director and writer Marie Brassard says she has never received any particular directive on how things should be done. "I simply know that there is something inside that I have to let out and I let this happen in public, in front of everyone." With Me Talking to Myself in the Future, the Quebecois visionary uses music, dialogue and cutting-edge effects in her play about a dying old woman, set in a fantastical dream world. The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China's Emperors
According to the Chinese Emperor K'ang-hsi, it was important to observe things in person. "If you claim to know something on the basis of hearsay," the 17th-century ruler explained, "you'll be a laughing stock to those who really know." Curiously it wasn't until 1925 that common Chinese folk were allowed into the Royal residence to gaze upon the treasures. Thankfully, 200 of the artifacts are on display at the Royal Ontario Museum.
