Royal Agricultural Winter Fair
Sheep fans love this annual agrarian fandango, just for the shear thrill of it. The 11-day event of wool-gathering, horse shows, butter sculpting and outrageously sized vegetables comes to a close this weekend. Hoping to tap into the foodie culture this year, the Royal has come up with For the Love of Food, a new feature linking food producers with scientists, health professionals and chefs in discussions and demonstrations relating to the future of farming. Winners and Losers
"The idea of capitalism is not just success," the American satirist P. J. O'Rourke once said, "but also the failure that allows success to happen." A frank, two-handed production explores the zero-sum game with a staged conversation that ranges from the shallow and the pithy to the political and personal, as it relates to the ruthlessness of modern day private enterprise. Jimmy Webb
Wichita Lineman, Galveston, The Highwayman and MacArthur Park. With songs like those, a songwriter could make quite a name for himself. Which is what Jimmy Webb did. Lyle Lovett, Carly Simon, Joe Cocker, Brian Wilson, Amy Grant and Kris Kristofferson: with friends like those, one could make a new, rootsy, star-studded album called Still Within the Sound of My Voice. Swan Lake
For the sixth time, the National Ballet of Canada revives James Kudelka's fascinating 1999 rework of the Tchaikovsky-scored winged classic. The four-act production tells a heartbreaking story of spells, heartbreak and birds of different feathers. Purists who stand by the Kirov/Bolshoi traditional Swan Lake might not be fans of Mr. Kudelka's intriguing version, but for those who wish for inventiveness and evolution in classical ballet this is a fairy-tale come true. Hockey Hall of Fame Legends Classic
They were starburst, they were golden and now they're getting back to the Gardens. As part of this weekend's Hockey Hall of Fame festivities, city shinny icons Darryl Sittler and Lanny McDonald captain competing teams in an exhibition that features two squads of 2013 HHOF inductees and a ton of former Toronto Maple Leafs. They'll lace up at the enduring building at Church and Carleton, once the arena of blue-and-white dressed heroes, now home to a Loblaws and, upstairs, a hockey rink. Nov. 10, 2 p.m. $62.45.
