York West councillor Giorgio Mammoliti.

Former mayoral candidate Giorgio Mammoliti is set to endorse frontrunner Rob Ford Wednesday, sources tell The Globe and Mail.

Mr. Mammoliti is scheduled to make the announcement at 11 a.m. at his campaign headquarters in North York, according to a news release from his re-election campaign. The release does not say whom Mr. Mammoliti plans to endorse.

The veteran councillor for Ward 7 York West has been playing coy for months about whom he would back for a post he himself wanted. Mr. Mammoliti was polling in single digits when he dropped out of the mayoral race in July.

Mr. Mammoliti's internal polling reportedly showed that most of his supporters would swing to the Etobicoke councillor. The endorsement comes despite a long history of animosity between Mr. Ford and Mr. Mammoliti dating back to at least 2002, when Mr. Ford called his Italian-Canadian colleague a "Gino Boy" on the floor of council.

Mr. Mammoliti did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
