A woman who allegedly abducted her 12-year-old daughter turned herself into Toronto police on Tuesday but the girl hasn't been found and police say they're concerned about her safety.

"We don't have any information or evidence to suggest any harm has come to her, however we don't know where she is and she's not in the care of anybody we know," said Toronto police spokeswoman Constable Wendy Drummond.

Last Thursday, police asked for help from the public finding the mother and daughter, who were last seen on July 16 near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West. Police said they were concerned for their safety and alleged that Veasna Heng fled with her daughter, Dystani Heng, during a parental visit.

Const. Drummond said there was a shared custody arrangement between the mother and grandmother. "The mom had taken the child on a visitation but didn't return the child," she said.

She said the mother hasn't given police information about the whereabouts of her daughter, who is described as 4'10" and 90 lbs.

Ms. Heng turned herself into a North Toronto police station on Tuesday and was charged with abduction in contravention of a custody order. She was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.
