Charges have been laid in the death of Jacoub Favila, a seven-year-old boy killed in a hit and run in Mississauga, Ont. on New Year's Day.

Radio station CFRB reported Saturday that Jose Renteria was charged with dangerous driving, criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene in connection with the accident.

Ontario Provincial Police Sergeant Dave Woodford said police arrested the 30-year-old in Cobourg Friday night.

Jacoub was in his family's minivan when it was rear-ended by a Hummer on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Hummer took off and was later found abandoned.

Jacoub was in the van with his mother, father, and five siblings — including his twin brother.

He was taken to hospital but later died.
