The Special Investigations Unit says a 38-year-old man shot by Toronto police earlier this week died in hospital on Friday.

The provincial police watchdog says it's investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Peter Lumanglas of Toronto.

The SIU says early on April 16, a Toronto officer pulled over a motor vehicle for a traffic stop.

It says there was an interaction between the officer and Mr. Lumanglas, who was driving the vehicle.

The officer was stabbed in the neck and Mr. Lumanglas sustained gunshot wounds. Police say Constable Jeff Blair is expected to recover.

The SIU is an arm's-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
