A 22-year-old Mississauga man accused in a fatal hit-and-run that killed an elderly gas station attendant five months ago was awaiting a court appearance Monday morning.

Abdullahi Mohamoud-Strong is charged with failing to remain causing death, criminal negligence causing death, theft under $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

He was arrested on the weekend following an extensive investigation in which help from the public was "instrumental," police said.

Hashem Atifeh Rad, 62, was working at a Petro-Canada outlet at Truscott Drive and Southdown Road on May 19 when he tried to thwart a so-called "gas and dash" – fuelling a vehicle and then fleeing the scene without paying.

Mr. Atifeh Rad tried to prevent the car from leaving, and was struck by it and dragged into the roadway. He died in hospital the next day.

Mr. Mohamoud-Strong had pumped about $75 worth of gas into his beige Nissan Altima, it's alleged.

Detectives interviewed hundreds of Nissan Altima owners but are still anxious to speak to witnesses.
