One person has died and another was wounded from a shooting incident outside Yorkdale mall in Toronto's north end on Saturday.
Toronto Detective Rob North said police responded to reports of gun fire around 8 p.m. ET and located the deceased male victim in the mall's parking lot. The wounded victim was rushed to hospital, where he is undergoing medical treatment and is listed in "serious, but stable condition," said Det. North at a press conference.
Toronto police revealed few details about the suspects' or victims' identities. However, Det. North said police were looking for five or six suspects.
The altercation involved two groups of people and started inside Yorkdale mall, said Det. North. The groups left the mall and went into the parking lot, where the confrontation escalated and turned fatal.
Det. North did not characterize the shootings as gang-related, but said "there were no innocent people or innocent bystanders that were shot or targeted."
A considerable number of police cruisers were at the mall and police tape was used to block off part of the parking lot.
Det. North said police were looking at video from surveillance cameras and talking to witnesses. They were also checking cars as they left the parking lot, and holding a number of vehicles at the scene, asking their owners to be patient and return Sunday to pick them up.
