Toronto police have identified a 24-year-old man shot dead while stopped at a red light in what investigators are calling a targeted shooting.

Police say Olatoyebi Waheed was driving a car stopped at a light at Eglinton Avenue West and Jane Street in the city's west end on Monday night when a suspect opened fire.

Waheed was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest and his 23-year-old male passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Police say they have recovered the black SUV believed to have been used by the suspect.
