Police are warning people about a card-skimming scam involving ATMs at hospitals in and around Toronto.

Police say they first got word of the scam in November after a number of guards who service ATMs at hospitals started noticing devices had been glued or taped to the bank machines.

They say the hospitals were likely targeted because of the high volume of traffic and the fact that the machines are in open common areas.

Staff Insp. Bryce Evans says eight hospitals have been targeted so far, including The Hospital for Sick Children, Scarborough General Hospital and North York Hospital.

The card skimmer also had pin-hole cameras attached to it to record people as they entered their PIN numbers.

Police say the best way to protect yourself is to cover the keypad as much as possible as you enter your information.
