Two police shootings in the city on Sunday, neither of them fatal, are under scrutiny by the Special Investigations Unit, the provincial watchdog agency that examines police-civilian interactions resulting in death or serious injury.

The first took place at around 2:30 a.m. and began when shots were fired outside a west-end nightclub, leaving two people injured, one of them critically.

When police responded, a car with three men in it was seen fleeing the scene, a parking lot outside the Musik club, and the officers opened fire, the SIU said.

Two of the occupants were struck and wounded and the third was arrested when the bullet-scarred car halted near the CNE's Dufferin Gate.

One of the officers was also injured, apparently when he fell down in the confusion, SIU investigator Derrick Wide told reporters, adding that events were still being pieced together.

"This is very complex, there's a lot of people involved and we will be gaining further information," Mr. Wide said.

"We don't know how many shots were fired at this time because we are still examining police firearms, but we know that at least two officers were involved."

Later in the day, the SIU was summoned for a second time following a domestic incident on the eighth floor of a Scarborough high-rise near McCowan Road and Hwy 401.

Police were responding around 9:30 p.m. to a stabbing incident involving a woman in her 30s, wounded in the neck, and one of the officers shot and wounded a 31-year-old man in the chest, the SIU said in a release.

Both victims were taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where they were listed in serious condition.
