RCMP cordon off a crime scene using police tap

A Toronto school teacher has been charged in an assault investigation after allegedly punching one of his female students in the face, Toronto police say.

Ferdinando Marrello, 57, a teacher at Monsignor Fraser College, a Catholic alternative and adult secondary school at 700 Markham St., has been charged.

Police allege he grabbed the student by the throat before punching her at the Annex location of Monsignor Fraser College.

The school's website calls itself a "haven for the marginalized student" stating that their mission is to "empower students to their full potential by providing … role models of gospel values, Catholic teachings and belief."

Monsignor Fraser College is a school of 1,100 students aged 16 to 18, according to the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

According to the Ontario College of Teachers, Mr. Marrello obtained a bachelor of education degree from the University of Toronto where he later completed his professional education program in 1994. He also has qualifications for business and religious education and is a specialist of special education.

"This is not reflective of the caring and compassionate environment that goes on in our schools in terms of teaching," said the board's spokesman John Yan.

Police said they are not aware of the student requiring any treatment.

Mr. Yan said Mr. Marrello has been put on leave pending the outcome of the legal process.

"These are allegations and they still have to be proven in the court of law," said Mr. Yan.

Mr. Marrello is schedule to appear in court at Old City Hall on June 5.
