Police are investigating the death of a Toronto pedestrian who was run over by a bus early Friday morning.

The accident happened at 5:20 a.m. as a TTC bus was pulling away from a stop on Dufferin Street just north of St. Clair Avenue West.

The victim, a 55-year-old man, was hit by the bus's front right tire, said Traffic Services Constable Hugh Smith.

After the southbound bus had driven a few metres, a passenger who had just gotten off banged on the side of the vehicle to alert the driver that there was a man lying face-down on the street. "Unfortunately, it was too late," Constable Smith said.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead on scene.

Police believe the man may have slipped on an adjacent snow-covered laneway and fell in front of the wheel - out of the driver's sightline - just before the bus left the stop.

"He may have lost his balance or stumbled," Constable Smith said. "Being that time of the morning, it was still dark."

Constable Smith said investigators plan to seize footage from the bus's on-board cameras.

Toronto Police are also still investigating the death of a pedestrian by a TTC streetcar last week.

The man was dragged for several blocks underneath the Queen Street streetcar near Bathurst Street on Jan. 11.
