He's been on the United Kingdom's most-wanted list for the past seven years, having disappeared after the beating death of man in Wales.
Now, Toronto police have arrested Mohamed Abdi Mahad, who was living under an alias in Toronto since fleeing the United Kingdom after the April, 2003, crime, officials say.
On an arrest warrant issued by South Wales police, Toronto officers entered a home in the Dupont and Lansdowne Avenue area at 9:30 a.m. and arrested Mr. Mahad. Police said he was living in Canada illegally and going by the name Kalid Sharif.
The 27-year-old hadn't been working, said Constable Tony Vella, and he has lived in the same area of Toronto since arriving in Canada in 2003.
Mr. Mahad is a Somali citizen and had been living in the United Kingdom when Mohammed Musa Mahoud was hit in the head with a metal weightlifting bar in Butetown, Wales. Toronto police allege the suspect was involved in the attack and that witnesses reported seeing him beating Mr. Mahoud.
He later died of his injuries in hospital.
The U.K. most-wanted listing says Mr. Mahad goes by a handful of aliases, including Mohammed Hersi, Yabada, Mafia and London Boy. Mr. Mahad had been spotted in Sheffield, Bristol and Toronto, according to the listing.
He is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Thursday at 10 a.m.
