A Toronto police officer is suffering life-threatening injuries after a crash in the city's west end.

The officer was rushed to hospital late Saturday afternoon after the two-vehicle crash that took place around Bloor Street and Highway 427.

Deputy Police Chief Peter Sloly says the officer has undergone a series of operations but won't elaborate on the nature of the injuries.

But he says the injured man is getting the best of care.

The head of the Toronto Police Association, Mike McCormack, says the officer, Const. John Zivcic, is a seven-year veteran of the force.

He says Zivcic is a "well-respected, hard-working police officer."

Police officers from around the province have posted messages of sympathy on social media.

Sloly says the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.
