Police raids on two downtown Toronto addresses Sunday, including an apartment on trendy Yorkville Avenue, led to the seizure of eight firearms along with a giant haul of drugs that may have included a quantity of the synthetic drug known as "bath salts."
If so, it would be one of the first Canadian seizures of the drug, which drew bizarre headlines last month when a man allegedly high on it was arrested in Miami and charged after eating a portion of another man's face.
In all, the drugs seized on the weekend were worth an estimated $1.5-million, including an $800,000 haul of crystal meth, police said.
Bennett Vuong, 27, was already behind bars on other charges when officers executed a search warrant in his Yorkville apartment where they allegedly seized cash and drug equipment.
A second search of a house on Huron Street, north of Queen, led to the discovery of the firearms, which included seven handguns and an AK-47 assault rifle, and more drugs.
As well, police discovered a package labelled "bath salts," which was being tested for its contents, together with $175,000 allegedly found in Mr. Vuong's car.
In total, he faces a total of 82 charges involving drugs and guns.
