Plans for Mayor Rob Ford to join his Scarborough campaign workers via Skype at a birthday party in his honour have been cancelled, campaign workers say.
The mayor's nephew Michael Ford confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the plans for the mayor to Skype into his own birthday party have been cancelled.
Mr. Ford cannot attend the party thrown for him by campaign volunteers in person because he has spent the past several weeks receiving treatment for "problems with alcohol." The mayor took a temporary leave of absence after The Globe revealed the existence of a second videotape that appears to show the mayor smoking crack cocaine.
Councillor Doug Ford confirmed that his brother would not be speaking with the crowd, after arriving at the party.
"He just wants to thank everyone that came out today, and looks forward to getting out on the campaign trail," Councillor Ford said.
The councillor said it was his decision for the mayor not to Skype in, saying the mayor "wants to focus on why he's there."
Mr. Ford isn't the only Toronto mayoral candidate celebrating a birthday on Wednesday. Former Rogers CEO and radio personality John Tory will be celebrating his 60 birthday Wednesday with a big party in his honour – complete with a live performance by a local band.
Mr. Tory's party, which will take place Wednesday night at the Novotel Hotel in North York, will feature live music by Toronto-based cover band Sonic Tonic.
"On May 28th, John is inviting you to spend a night with his family, friends and supporters to celebrate … well … him!," the invitation reads.
