A man accused of running down and killing a Toronto police officer with a stolen snowplow will go to trial Jan. 7, 2013.
Sergeant Ryan Russell died in January of 2011 after being struck while trying to stop the plow during a wild police chase through snowy streets.
Richard Kachkar is charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The attempted-murder charges relate to a taxi driver and another police officer.
Mr. Kachkar, a drifter who moved between Toronto and St. Catharines, Ont., was shot and wounded by police when they arrested him after Sgt. Russell was hit.
Sgt. Russell's death in the line of duty – the first for Toronto police since 2002 – sparked a huge outpouring of public support.
