Just over a week after a car exploded in the heart of Beijing, a series of smaller explosions rocked Taiyuan, killing one person in the provincial capital 400 kilometres away.

The explosions happened at about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday near the Shanxi Communist Party Committee offices, the state-owned Xinhua news agency said. Xinhua reported one injury and damage to two vehicles. CCTV, Chinese state television reported damage to 20 vehicles, some of which had windows blown out, and said the blasts had emanated from flower beds. Steel ball bearings were recovered, raising suspicions about home-made bombs, Xinhua said. Witnesses reported seven blasts, official reports said.

Photos posted to social media showed smoke billowing into the sky, followed by a street crowded with fire trucks and other emergency response vehicles. One appeared to show a person lying down next to a black SUV.
