Canadian officials are looking to gather information from Mexican authorities about the death of an Edmonton university student at a resort in that country.

News reports have identified the man as 21-year old Chris Rogers of St. Albert, outside of Edmonton.

The engineering student from the University of Alberta was vacationing with friends at a resort in Cancun last weekend.

An online news site in Mexico, noticaribenews.com, says Mr. Rogers was punched by another guest in a bar at the Hotel Great Parnassus.

The report says a bartender and a waitress helped put ice on the man's nose and he appeared to be hallucinating.

He later fell from a second floor balcony.

A spokesman with Canadian Foreign Affairs says consular officials in Mexico are providing assistance to the man's family.
