Globe reporters followed the protests, providing live updates from the streets of Toronto. Using their updates, we've reconstructed a timeline of how the protests escalated:

12:47 p.m. - The March (blue line on map below )

12:47 p.m. - Ann Hui: Queen's Park south lawn filled with protesters now.

1:25 p.m. - Adrian Morrow: Protest is so huge, it is taking nearly half an hour to get everyone formed up.

1:46 p.m. - Ann Hui: Police have crowd blocked off at University and Elm now.

1:53 p.m. - Ann Hui: About 50 riot cops lined up at Richmond Street, ensuring crowds turn at Queen Street



2:12 p.m. - Queen Street Confrontation (green line on map below )

2:12 p.m. - Matt Frehner: Riot police line up two rows deep on Richmond near MuchMusic.

2:16 p.m. - Matt Frehner: Police at Spadina get set to steer the protest back north. Will it work?

2:21 p.m. - Kate Allen: Riot cop on horseback: "Orders are if anyone breaches the line we take them down, period."

2:38 p.m. - Ann Hui: Group in black hoodies and handkerchiefs over faces at Queen and Spadina. Some holding wooden sticks.



3:26 p.m. - Push East on Queen (red line on map below )

3:26 p.m. - Anna Mehler Paperny: People in black, several of them masked, are smashing windows on Queen - Starbucks and Scotiabank. Some have hammers.

3:36 p.m. - Ann Hui: CBC van had bricks thrown at it, broken windows. TTC streetcars abandoned at York and Queen. Protesters still marching, but not chanting.

3:37 p.m. - Adrian Morrow: Protesters marching east on Queen. Two streetcar sprayed with anti-summit graffiti and anarchy symbols. Ads ripped down.



3:46 p.m. - Bay Street burning (purple line on map below )

3:46 p.m. - Adrian Morrow: Police have retreated from King and Bay. Protesters smashing cop cars and One Canadian Place.

3:49 p.m. - Ann Hui: Police car completely on fire now, thick black smoking up. People shouting that it's going to explode.

3:53 p.m. - Ann Hui: Everyone running back north on Yonge now. Fear that car could explode. March up Yonge now.



3:55 p.m. - Vandalism up Yonge Street (olive line on map below )

3:55 p.m. - Katie Hewitt: Security get word and locked down Eaton Centre. Say it's not safe inside or outside - "Protesters are breaking everything."

4:10 p.m. - Adrian Morrow: Now the Adidas store at Yonge and Dundas is smashed.

4:14 p.m. - Adrian Morrow: About three thousand protesters marching north on Yonge. Black bloc of young people in the lead.

4:16 p.m. - Adrian Morrow: American Apparel and Foot Locker got the worst of it. One guy even took out a mannequin and hoisted it like a trophy.



4:40 p.m. - Back to Queen's Park (burgundy line on map below )

4:40 p.m. - Ann Hui: Reaching Queen's Park Circle now, and a black Chrysler van is getting smashed. "It's a cop car," someone said.

4:52 p.m. - Kate Allen: Cops coming east on College, north on University, boxing in violent protesters at Queen's Park

5:51 p.m. - Ann Hui: Crowd starting to thin out. Riot police look on.

6:47 p.m. - Ann Hui: Probably about 500 protesters still milling around at south lawn of Queen's Park, waiting to see what's going to happen. Riot police still here.

7:33 p.m. - Adrian Morrow: Police in riot gear closing in. Pushing protesters back. Horses charging.
